Francois Montand Brut, Jura $11.75

Zardetto Private Cuvée Brut (Prosecco) $9.95

2012 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco $56.75

Barolo Marcenasco has ancient origins. There are historical documents from the "Rigestum Comunis Albae" that bear witness to the cultivation of the Nebbiolo wine in the "Marcenascum" area already back in the 12th Century.dec4.png

In 1965 Renato Ratti purchased the first small Barolo Marcenasco® vineyard near the ancestral home in the hamlet of Annunziata below La Morra. Barolo Marcenasco always represents a superb value in Barolo, with youthful drinkability combined with enough structure to age well up to a decade. 2012 is a particularly succulent, rich version. Red ruby, some garnet.

Fine classic, elegant dark cherry bouquet with a hint of licorice, some earthiness, and florality. Fresh, full, dark cherry fruit, fairly rich and well textured with velvety, powerful tannins and good length. Classic warm cherry-plum and tannin coated fruit. Very definite La Morra cherry/floral, almost raspberry like character.  Structured for aging, yet lots of character and fruit now.  Richer than 2005/2007 but also more approachable! Great stuff!

2007 Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso ‘Etichetta Colnago’ $83.50

Only a very small quantity of this superior Brunello was bottled with a special label honoring the great bicycle maker Ernesto Colnago at 80 years of age.

dec5.pngTwo great Italian symbols, Brunello e Bicicletta! Ciacci and Colnago. Ciacci owner Paolo Bianchini is a great bicyclist, having raced in the 2010 Giro d’Italia which passed through Montalcino, as an amateur.  To honor Ernesto Colnago just 80 magnums and a few cases of bottles were labeled with this special label for their great Pianrosso vineyard Brunello.

Medium ruby, garnet rim.  Deep, mahogany, leather-cherry bouquet with solid, warm black plum/cherry compote accents. Very deep, anise-inflected rich flavors, showing great weight and balance with fine tannins, graphite-anise and leathery earth tones on the finish. Lively yet full texture. Gains velvetiness,  length and density with a couple hours aeration.   Stylish, long, and capable of another decade’s improvement., yet drinking wonderfully now!

RHONE LEGENDS Drinking history!

2012 Ch Ste Cosme Gigondas Le Claux  $94.5o

Saint Cosme - located north to the village of Gigondas - is the most ancient estate in the region. Lying on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa which very probably already had its own vineyard, the estate's existence in 1416 is attested by a document mentioning the granting by Jean de Chalon, Price of Orange, of "land for the planting of vines on the Saint Cosme slopes." Owner dec6.pngLouis Barruol's ancestors acquired it in 1570, and at the end of the sixteenth century built a splendid residence over existing cellars.

Le Claux (Clow, as in ‘glow’) is the oldest vineyard on the St Cosme property in Gigondas, planted originally in 1870 on Gloire de Montpellier rootstock just after the remedy for Phylloxera was figured out!  It may be the oldest extant vineyard in France as well! It was meant to be pulled out in 1914, but Barruol’s grandfather went off to fight in WWI, and died, so the family never got around to pulling it out!

The vineyard is composed of 12 million year clay and limestone marl deposits called Tortonian; the same as in Barolo, Italy and the only vineyard in all of Gigondas so composed. . Very traditionally made, with six weeks maceration on the skins and only 30% new oak barrels used for aging one year. Solid ruby color, with deep, pure Grenache cherry -plum aromas, with hints of raspberry, smoky herbs (garrigue), and graphite. Vinous, dense dark cherry, damson plum flavors, with earthy-anise accents that stain the palate. Great chewiness and length, showing depth, concentration and finesse now, but will easily age 10+ years. As John Livingstone-Learmonth ( wrote in Decanter magazine, “Exceptional, and deserves its price tag”!

2013 Chateau de La Gardine Chateauneuf du Pape $39.75

One of Chateauneuf du Pape’s oldest estates is back on form, much to our delight! The winemaking tradition of the Brunel family dates back to the 17th century. Gaston Brunel, a famous négociant, acquired the Château de La Gardine in Châteauneuf du Pape in 1945. The estate is now run by his two sons, Patrick and Maxime, and their families.

The Gardine bottle, both original and elegant, is the result of a happy coincidence…(we always loved the bottle!-JB)dec7.png
When he first wanted to expand his cellar, while digging in the ground, Gaston Brunel found an 18th C.  mouth-blown bottle. He loved it and decided to use a similar shape for all his wine, beginning in 1964. Today the wine quality is as distinctive as the bottle and back to representing one of the fullest yet stylish wines of this great historic region as well as affordable!

The wine is composed of 65% Grenache, 15%Mourvedre, 14% Syrah, & 1% Muscardin.  Mediumfull ruby violet. Aged 9-14 months in 60% vat, 40% 1-6 yr barrels, co-fermented. Very fresh, vibrant,  black/red fruit aromas. Some meatiness with good rich flavors, solid finish with fine graphite/syrah flavors. The Potpourri chinese five spice/star anise aromas highlight the Mourvedre. Medium+ body with good grip and structure to keep 5-7 yrs. Chewy finish. Less Grenache than Syrah/Mourvedre on palate.

We know how partial everyone here in WA is regarding drinking California wines – support your local sheriff etc!  BUT…these past 3-4 years have produced a bevy of incredibly good, deeply flavored wines that should not be ignored. Every one of these is a classic, highly rated, age-worthy wine. Granted some of them are expensive (though less than most Bordeaux Classified Growths), but ‘tis the Season!  We have also included some aged wines to tempt you further! These are treasures that will make great gifts.
